Sevilla FC, founded in 1890, is one of the oldest football clubs in Spain. Based in Seville, Andalusia, the club has a long and passionate history marked by both triumphs and challenges. Sevilla played its first official match in 1905 and quickly became one of the prominent clubs in southern Spain. Throughout the early 20th century, the team established itself regionally, winning multiple Andalusian championships before entering the national spotlight.
The club won its first Copa del Rey in 1935 and its only La Liga title in the 1945–46 season, during a golden era led by legendary players like Juan Arza. Over the following decades, Sevilla experienced fluctuating fortunes, spending time in both the top and second divisions. The 1990s were particularly tough, with relegations and financial difficulties threatening the club’s stability.
A major turnaround came in the early 2000s under sporting director Monchi, whose talent-spotting and development system transformed the club. Sevilla began to build a competitive team known for smart transfers and a strong European presence. The club achieved continental success by winning the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007. This began a golden era in European competition, as Sevilla went on to win the UEFA Europa League multiple times, setting a record with victories in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, and 2023.
